Piemonte means 'foot of the mountain'. The region is world famous for a number of prestigious wines including Gavi, Barolo, Barbaresco and Asti Spumante. The vineyards and wineries in Piemonte are highly concentrated - about 800 producers of Barolo and Barbaresco produce wines from an average vineyard of only 5 acres. Piemonte has 50 DOC zones - more than any other Italian region.
